My artistic research arises from my autobiographical account of lived experiences examining themes of boundaries, human connection, labor & repetition. These artworks explore the realm of hand building using repeated units, printed plastic filament (PLA), and epoxy resin. Within these pieces, I explore various meanings that arise from the combination of handmade and printed lines. Viewers can observe the fusion of handmade techniques or manmade 3D (three-dimensional) printed creations, depending on their age and relationship to manual craftsmanship and plastic manufacturing. The intersection of these two distinct realities creates a captivating correlation between the handmade and the mechanized print as they become one in the shadow. To join these two binaries together, plastic and thread, mechanized and craft renews lacemaking traditions while considering the modern era of 3D printing.
Initially, these artworks may seem quite literal to the exhibition's title, Pushing Buttons. They take the shape of familiar forms like circles or squares, but in reality, they are either extended or concealing another component within their rounded structure. It’s through simplicity that we uncover complexity. My artwork explores the complexities of material transformation in the physical world, where craftsmanship inhabits in a complex place between the hand and the machine.
